Workforce Recovery Training Program
On September 10, 2017, Hurricane Irma made landfall in the State of Florida as a Category 4 storm. The after-effects of Hurricane Irma have created and increased the demand for construction supplies and more importantly skilled construction workers. This grant supports a new labor force for post-disaster construction and as well Floridians looking for new employment in the diverse field of construction.
Programs
The following Valencia College Accelerated Skills Training programs are part of the Workforce Recovery Training Program.
Welding Technology
This 28-week program prepares you for an entry-level career as a welder. You will learn fabrication, oxyfuel cutting, plasma arc cutting, carbon arc cutting, welding symbols, shield metal arc, gas metal arc welding, and equipment troubleshooting. Students have the opportunity to earn industry certifications in shield metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and OSHA 10.
Starting wages are between $18 to $20 per hour.
Heavy Equipment Operator
In this 10-week program students get simulation and actual hands-on training on a Caterpillar Skid Steer, Wheel Loader, Bulldozer, and Hydraulic Excavator. Students have the opportunity to earn industry certifications in NCCER Site Safety, NCCER Core Construction, NCCER Heavy Equipment Level 1, OSHA 10, FDOT Advanced Maintenance of Traffic, Excavation Competent Person, and Confined Space Confident person.
Starting wages are between $16 to $19 per hour.
Carpentry
This intensive 10-week program will launch your career in one of the most needed positions in the construction industry. Every area of construction needs carpenters to complete their work. You will learn structural framing, construction math, stair layouts, construction drawings, principles of project management, concrete forming and refurbishment, anchoring systems, door, and window systems, fall protection, and site safety. Students have the opportunity to earn industry certification in NCCER Carpentry Level 1, NCCER Core, NCCER Site Safety, and OSHA 10.
Starting wages are between $17 to $20 per hour.
Electrical Powerline Technician
This 15-week program prepares you for an exciting career as an Electrical Powerline Technician. This career is needed not only for the maintenance of power systems but during a storm these brave heroes are responsible for restoring power to our community. You will learn how to climb poles, introduction to electrical test equipment, power line worker safety, introduction to electrical theory, climb wood structures, aerial framing, and rigging. Students will have the opportunity to earn NCCER Power Line Worker Level 1, NCCER Core Construction, NCCER Site Safety, Temporary Traffic Control Advanced, OSHA 10, and CPR/First Aid training.
Starting wages are between $22 to $26 per hour.
Residential Maintenance Technician
You can learn to be someone’s hero in a time of need. Our program prepares you for a diverse career as a Residential Maintenance Technician. You will learn preventative maintenance, smart home technologies, fire alarm systems, plumbing, HVAC, pool and spa operations, appliance repair, electrical AC/DC, tile installations, and green technologies. Students have the opportunity to earn industry certifications in Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician, NCCER Core Construction, NCCER Site Safety, Certified Pool and Spa Operations, and National Fair Housing for Maintenance Workers.
Starting wages are between $20 to $24 per hour with possible benefits such as reduced rent.
Residential/ Commercial Electrician
In this 10-week program, students learn the essential skills to become an Electrician Helper. Topics include installation, electrical circuits, circuitry drawings, and wiring methods, rough installation procedures, electrical theory and National electrical code, wire ways, raceways, and fittings. Students have the opportunity to earn six nationally recognized industry certifications in the field of construction and electricity.
Starting wages at $18 to $20 per hour.
Commercial Truck Driving – CDL A and B
This four-week program prepares students for a diverse career as commercial truck drivers. This program is designed to prepare students for sitting for the state of Florida Commercial Driver’s License exam. Students learn to drive a tractor-trailer combination or a truck with a capacity of at least 26,001 pounds.
Starting wages for this position range from $22 to $28 per hour.

Services provided to students who qualify for this program are:
Job Search
Job search services include helping students select a career field, writing a professional resume, interviewing skills, and proactive connections with employers. Students also work with a recruiter to remove any barriers such as transportation, childcare, and other supportive services.
Language Training
Language Training for students who may not be proficient in English. Students would be assessed on language ability and a plan for development would be created to meet the student’s needs.
